While a common form of energy, natural gas can also be quite dangerous when it stops functioning correctly.

If you notice any problems with your gas line, it’s important to call for professional help as soon as possible. Any delays can quite literally prove deadly for you and your family.

Unsure what signs can indicate a gas leak? The experts at HomeShield LV have you covered:

What are the dangers of gas leaks?

One of the first signs of a gas leak is a distinct “rotten egg” smell that’s hard to miss. By the time you notice it, you won’t have long before the gas can cause flu-like symptoms such as dizziness and headaches. Natural gas also carries the potential for explosions when gas is leaking, making the use of nearby electronics dangerous.

If you notice the smell of gas:

  • Get away from your home before calling 911. Do not use your cell phone near the gas smell.
  • Do not use any electrical appliances.
  • Turn off all gas valves.
  • Avoid smoking or lighting any flames.

Do not try to find the leak on your own. The danger involved demands professional help.

There is also a second type of gas leak that’s much harder to detect: carbon monoxide. Unlike most natural gas, carbon monoxide is odorless. However, it is extremely dangerous when inhaled, causing symptoms of illness that will lead to death if not noticed quickly.

Because it is so difficult to detect, it’s important to take the following measures to help limit your exposure to carbon monoxide:

  • Install carbon monoxide detectors throughout your home.
  • Make sure your home is properly ventilated, especially around water heaters, fireplaces, furnaces, and other such fixtures.
  • If you’re using a space heater that’s powered by gas, make sure that it is venting properly.
  • Do not use a gas stove to heat your home.

In addition to the usual causes of aging pipes or improper installation, gas leaks also commonly arise from digging around your home. Before starting projects such as tree planting or building a deck, it’s a good idea to call a professional to make sure there are no potential gas lines in the area.
