Having easy access to clean water is important, especially when you live in the hot southwestern desert.

When your septic system breaks, it can create more issues than other broken plumbing. While flooding might pose the most immediate danger, having a large volume of untreated wastewater sitting stagnant around your home can serve as a hotbed for disease.

If you suspect something might be wrong with your septic system, the professionals at HomeShield LV are here to help. We offer a comprehensive list of solutions designed to tackle any septic tank replacement or repair need. If you’re unsure whether your system is damaged or if you even have a septic system at all, we’ll perform a quick diagnostic and maintenance check to provide you with the best possible fix.

Do I even have a septic system?

Because it’s buried deep underground, you may not know whether you have a septic system in the first place. If you are unsure, here are a few signs that you probably do:

  • You rely on well water.
  • The waterline entering your home does not have a meter.
  • Your water or property tax bill has the line: “$0.00 Sewer Amount Charged.”
  • Your neighbors have a septic system.

If you need to find your septic system, whether because you suspect damages or for any other reason, there are a few places you can start looking. If you have it, your home’s “as built” drawing will probably show you where to find the septic tank. Otherwise, you can check your yard for lids and manhole covers. And if neither of those options help, you can always call the professionals at HomeShield LV to help locate it.

How do septic systems work?

Whenever water leaves your house, it passes from its main drainage pipe into a septic tank. This tank is a buried container made of concrete, fiberglass, or polyethylene that serves as a filter for waste. The tank is designed to hold wastewater long enough for solids to settle at the bottom, forming sludge, while oil and grease floats to the top as scum. Various compartments keep sludge and scum from leaving the tank.

Once treated, the wastewater then exists the tank and into the drainfield, a shallow, covered arrangement of trenches. The wastewater flows through a porous surface, such as gravel, before filtering through the soil. By the time it reaches the groundwater below, the soil will have naturally removed harmful bacteria and viruses as well as absorbed any nutrients that can benefit the soil.

Do I need septic system repair?

Although your septic system handles all of the wastewater in your home, leaks may not create the tell-tale stench that you may expect. Malfunctioning septic systems can display a number of symptoms before you can detect the smell, and once the odor hits, the damage may already be done. If you notice any of the following symptoms, it’s time to call in the professionals:

  • Wastewater backing up into household drains.
  • Water or muddy soil pooling in your basement or around your septic system.
  • Bright green and spongy grass on the drainfield, especially when the weather has been dry.
  • Your septic tank or drainfield creates a strong odor.
